From 1912 to 2015 Friedrich Schiller's drama of the freedom fighter William Tell was performed on the natural stage in Interlaken. No other work in literary history has had such a lasting impact on Swiss folk culture and no theatre stage presents Swiss history as vividly and authentically as the William Tell Open-Air Theatre in Interlaken. With Ueli Bichsel's production of Tell – ein Stück Schweiz (Tell - A Piece of Switzerland) performed from 2016 to 2018 and Oliver Stein's current new production of Tell, die Legend lebt! (Tell, the legend lives on!), the William Tell Open-Air Theatre has broken new ground. As before, the story is based on the William Tell drama written by Friedrich Schiller. The new aspect is that the confederates recount their experiences in Swiss dialect - only in a few quotations will you hear Schiller's original German text. History and modernity come together on the open-air stage in an exciting theatrical drama.
