Gray below, blue above – with this weather forecast, there is only one option: hover above the fog layer and start hiking. For this, Niederhorn is a particularly suitable excursion mountain at Lake Thun.

On a beautiful winter day, Niederhorn is the perfect viewpoint. You reach the lovely view by floating up with the Niederhorn cable car from Beatenberg. From Niederhorn you look over the Kandertal valley to Wildstrubel and Wildhorn, and further to Niesen and Stockhorn, which rise out of the gray cotton wool. Vertigo-inducing are the deep views into the Justistal, almost legendary is the long-distance view of the Bernese Oberland trio Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

These views remain with us on the easy downhill winter hike to Beatenberg. The winter hiking trail is marked with pink poles and partially follows the toboggan run to the mid-station Vorsass. Families often prefer this quick variant. The three-kilometer toboggan run is suitable for children and adults. Day passes for unlimited tobogganing fun can be purchased at the Niederhorn cable car, and sleds can also be rented there. At the mid-station Vorsass, with the mountain restaurant of the same name, is also the halfway point on our winter hike. While the sledders take the cable car back up to Niederhorn, we hike down all the way to Beatenberg with views of Lake Thun and the Alpine panorama.
