The view from First on Eiger, Fiescherhörner, Schreckhorn, Wetterhorn and other prominent peaks is overwhelming but also somewhat sobering when you realize how rapidly the glaciers are melting. From the end of the 19th century until the outbreak of the First World War, conditions were very different. Back then, ice production was a thriving business. Thousands of tons of ice were cut from the Lower and Upper Grindelwald glaciers and partially exported to Paris.
From First the hike leads over the Tierwang saddle to Hagel- and Häxeseewli, two beautiful mountain lakes. Then the path ascends to Wildgärst, whose summit area offers plenty of space for picnicking and enjoying the panoramic view. The Blau Gletscherli at the foot of Wildgärst will probably have melted away soon. The descent leads past it to Grosse Scheidegg, with a new perspective on magnificent peaks of the Bernese Alps, especially the Wetterhorn.
